How to Evacuate an AC system, Full Vacuum Procedure

Bryan goes deep into how to evacuate or “vacuum” an AC system, covering the Full Vacuum Procedure. This video is a collaboration with Paul from The Engineering Mindset channel.

🏆Check out Pauls video on how a vacuum pump works here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnqXEnn3DNk&feature=youtu.be

We take a deep dive into how to connect vacuum pumps, micron gauges, remove cores and much more to show you start to finish how to pull a deep vacuum on any air conditioner or refrigeration equipment.

First let me say I know nothing about HVAC systems. I am retired and basically I watch these videos for entertainment . I like learning new things and this is a good way to do it. My question “and this may show my stupidity” but when is the evacuation of a system necessary. Is it only done when components are changed out or at the initial installation I love watching your videos so keep them coming. Thanks

After the lines are vacuumed and you need to change the filter drier what has to be done to avoid the vacuumed line to absorb lots of air ?

Now a days no longer needed

    Nice work

Is it imperative to recover refrigerant before the vacuum and recharge process

  6. sammoveonat12

Great lesson! would you recommend running the evap motor to introduce heat to aid during the vacuum process?

  7. Harmeet Singh

Yeh, it is creating low pressure by "sucking" the molecules only

Have you ever heard of or used refrigerant gas instead of nitrogen to break the vacuum for the triple evacuation? My boss have reprimanded me for using nitrogen. Explanation is that refrigerant gas is dryer. Feedback please? I’m begging you and I would love some science behind it if there is any.

I wish I could get the guys at the company I work for to understand this. I only do ductless systems. Nobody uses a torque wrench, nobody pressure checks to the right pressure and evacuations are just a joke. I’m the only one that installs and evacuates properly. The funny part about this whole thing is that I’m not an HVAC guy. I’m a licensed electrician who installs ductless units better than all the HVAC guys. I’m so tired of theses guys doing the customer wrong that I’m seriously considering going back out on my own. Thanks for all the good videos.

    Wow very cool information

Can't possibly read all the comments and don't know how to search through them, so i'll ask the question, does the procedure remove water from the desiccant as well. And one more question please. What to do if you have mold inside the refrigerant and/or desiccant.

Is it a class 5 roaming vapor?

  13. Phillip Roman

good day sir , do you have a video on how to use clamp multimeter

  14. FullBlown Redneck

This video lasted longer than an accual pull down for most residential installers

  15. Eyezayah

There seems to be conflicting opinions on wether to expose your micron gauge to refrigerant or not…

  16. ALh J420

Do you open the lines after the vacuum for the negative pressure so it don't introduce moister and break vacuum.

  17. Sean Holly

😫 OMG I've been doing it wrong! Ty HVAC School!

  18. Harrison Dishman

this is why feildpeice sman is inferior to testo because the micron guage is internal to the manifold and not at the farthest point

  19. viisteist

so u dont need any dryer filter before the vacuum hose or smth ?

  20. Eric Gass

Some systems have the service ports at bastard angles. You're lucky to pull from one side without a valve for tool.

I have been doing HVAC for 15 years and this video blew my mind! Very insightful, thank you for the knowledge sir! Can you please tell me where I can get the hose and clamps for that set up? I have never seen this at a supply house and it is very effective!

I was never able to pull below 3500 microns on a 3-1/2 ton system with a 60 foot lineset. There were zero leaks in the system. Pump ran for hours. System has been running for 22 years.

  23. Brandon Davis

Can you, use helium, instead of nitrogen?

  24. Z Ack

Never had any issues when pulling a vac or cleanout.. but have had many a issue when filling.. had one where all i had were small 1lb tanks to fill an r22 system because was only things i could get at the monent. But was a simple 5 ton and when i got to the 4th bottle with purging and by the books aside from the small tanks.. but it for whatever reason took damn near 4 hours. To put in that last bottle and hit the correct sh… dunno what the hell.. but that systems been up and running ever since i replaced the compressor and reversing valve, that was 4 years ago. But ive had that happen a couple times where suddenly filling slows down to damn near a hault…

Thank you. Better than any college professors

  26. Pennconst101

Given enough time, will all the moisture be able to be boiled out the system with POE oil Such a case of as a condenser coil rupture and open for several days with storms.

  27. Van an Nguyen

My friend…. what to do if we don't have vacuum pump when we change filter drier …

  28. Edgar Leon

so how do you purge with nitrogen

  29. chevysaregr8

ICP are complete garbage. Love changing those heat exchangers don't you.

  30. Subramaniam Arumugam

    👌👌👌👌 Superb presentation. .
    Thank You Very Much.

  31. Cruz Quiroz

    superb video sir thanks

  32. Daniel Keene-Lopez

This is great. 5 years in the industry and I love learning ways to make my job easier and systems last longer

  33. Ghostrider GR

Hi .. when i close the vacuum pump.. after some minute's the testo gos 1500 micron its normal?

  34. James Satterfield

Does anyone know if there is a way to test an installed system to verify that it was vacuumed to the proper micron level by the HVAC company?
